In his debut feature, Isaiah Saxon creates an amusing fantasy environment that combines the milieu of ancient European folktales with the trappings and attitudes of modern life. He also eschews CGI in favor of old-school puppetry and animatronics to create this family adventure about a rebellious farm girl who defies the cultural fears instilled in her about the eponymous reclusive creatures of her Carpathian island village. With all the attention to detail Saxon focused on his world-building, it's a real shame he didn't bother to craft a narrative that was more than a brief outline of rudimentary story beats.
