The directorial debut of Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim is an attempt at the kind of over-the-top raunch-com that pivots to sentimental friendship-cinema which rarely works because neither extreme feels authentically arrived at. Still, the cast is great, and the screenplay, sloppy and contrived as it is, touches on many themes rarely covered in mainstream cinema. Too bad movies like this seem required to fit within standard formulas that neuter their transgressive spirit.
