Fuqua and Pizzolatto make an equal number of sharp and poor choices in transferring the Danish, single-location, real-time emergency call center thriller to Los Angeles during wildfire season. Their biggest change is the most typically American - this version is all about the failures of the individual, not the system; which enables yet another super-intense performance from Gyllenhaal but renders the themes of The Guilty less effective than those of Den Skyldige.
