When an iconic late-night talk show host (Thompson) finally hires her first female staff writer (Kaling) both women learn a thing or two. Kaling's didactic writing and a lame supporting cast result in a bland, tedious comedy. I'm not sure if it's meant to be a comedy or a lightweight drama about the comedy business, but you can't mock weak jokes with weak jokes.
