What starts out as a vital historical picture about the escaped slave who became a heroic conductor of the Underground Railroad devolves into a mess of biopic cliches and turns Tubman into Wonder Woman with Oscar-bait monologues. The iconic abolitionist deserves a more singular movie, but the first two-thirds of Lemmons' film tell the beginning of her story with power and insight.
