Set in a remote Turkish village, director Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s tells the story of five free-spirited sisters coming of age as modern girls in a conservative society. This semi-autobiographical début feature is a joy to watch, despite its dark and unsettling aspects. The first rate cast is led by an exceptional performance from newcomer Güneş Şensoy, as the youngest sister Lale. This is a winsome film that plays as both a light comedy and a revolutionary statement.
