There are good ideas in the survival film, The Grey, but their isn’t a very good film. Movies like this live and die by three things, the development of the characters, the staging of the action scenes and the writing of the dialogue scenes the happen between attacks.  Any subtext or points about life, death, machismo, God or cinema are pointless without getting all three of the main textural elements right. This story about a bunch of unpleasant oil workers who survive a plane crash in Alaska comes up short on all three.
